Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
Our address is 5400 Ward Rd. in the Aspen Business Park. We are in building 1, suite 100. Please feel free to use our on-site parking lot.
Is play therapy right for my child?
We believe that mental health care can benefit any person, even if there isn’t an accute challenge to address. Our approach to therapy with kids is child-centered, meaning they get to direct the play. This feels great for kids since there is very little in their lives that they actually get to control. Our goal for all our clients is to help them build their tolerance to difficult experiences and emotions. These are tools that will benefit them for their lifetime. Please schedule a free consultation via our contact form to learn more.
Isn't my kid too old to play?
One beauty of a child-centered approach is that we, as counselors, have the flexibility to meet your child where they are. They will never be required or even encouraged to play in a certain way or even to play at all! Whatever presents in the moment can be harnessed in our therapeutic approach, including resistance to attending therapy.
What does therapy for teens look like?
Although your teen is grown up in a lot of ways, neuroscience tells us that their brain is likely only about half-way through developing! Because of this, we tailor our talk therapy approach to working with teens. Rather than focus so much on the content of what teens share, we will be working with the underlying feelings that accompany their words. The goal, as with all our clients, is to help them build capacity for difficulties.
How do I talk to my child about coming to therapy?
Our view is that there is nothing wrong with your child; they are responding to their circumstances and environments with the best tools they have. Because of this, we’d prefer you not refer to us as doctors or as someone who will “fix” your kid. Simply saying something like, “You’re going to a place where you can play and do whatever you need to do to feel good,” is enough of an explanation for most young children.
Will you make recommendations for parenting time, custody, etc?
No. Per Colorado law, this is not our role. If you choose to move forward with counseling with us, your child will be our client, and our role will be to support them. We will require the consent of all guardians who have decision-making rights to begin treatment. We are happy to give you referrals for a Child Family Investigator (CFI) and/or a Parenting Coordinator/Decision Maker (PCDM) as needed.
What can I expect from our first visit?
Our initial intake appointments are tailored to each family, but we will always begin with some time just for the grown ups. During this time, we will review and sign necessary paperwork, talk through the therapy process in more depth, and answer questions you may have. We will further discuss the challenges your child is facing and work together to set some goals for our time together. This portion can be done in person or via zoom.
Then it will be your child's turn! We allow our clients to set the pace and tone of every session, so if your child is reserved, reluctant, or resistant at first, that is completely welcome. All of our time with your child can be therapeutic, even if it doesn't look like you might expect. We can tell you more about this during the consultation or intake.
What can I expect from subsequent visits?
Our standard session consists of 45 minutes of time with your child and a 15 minute parent/ guardian check in without your child. Sometimes we will be able to check in on the spot immediately following your child's time, and sometimes we will need to schedule the check in phone call or zoom with you for a different time between sessions.
If your child is 12 or older, the state of Colorado requires them, as the client, to give permission for parents/guardians to check in with the counselor. We will explain this, as well as the concept of confidentiality, to your child at our first meeting. If a tween or teen opts out of parent check ins, they will receive the full therapeutic hour (55 minutes) for their time with us.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes! We are paneled with Optum, Aetna, and Cigna. We are happy to generate a superbill/ paid invoice for you if you’d like to submit to another private insurance company for reimbursement. We are not currently paneled with Medicaid, and therefore we are prohibited from treating clients who have Medicaid coverage.
I have more questions that weren't answered here.
We would love to connect with you! Please reach out via our contact page, email, or phone. We will then schedule a time for a free 30 minute phone consultation so we can answer your questions. During this call we typically explain more about our approach to counseling and hear from you about the challenges your family is facing and what prompted you to reach out to us. Then we can mutually determine if we are a good fit for your family.
